There are only 2 more weeks of school! While I know everyone is very excited for summer we do need to get a little more learning done.
There are no big tests next week that I’m aware of.
Friday evening is the PTL BBQ.
Sunday, May 20th we are singing at the 11 am service.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

Dear Parents,
The musical is tonight at 7 pm. Please have your child at Zion by 6:30 pm. We will meet in the 5th grade classroom at that time. It’s going to be great!
Monday night is the fine arts festival at 7 pm. It will be held in the gym.
Tuesday, May 8th is our field trip to the St. Louis Arch and Old Court House. We will be leaving at 8:45 am and returning to school at 2:30 pm. If you are a parent coming on the trip with us, please be here by 8:30 so I can go over the expectations for the kids with all of you. Also, please remember to pack a sack lunch. We will be eating on the stairs under the arch, weather permitting.
Thursday is Awards Night. It starts at 6:30 pm and will be in the church sanctuary. Afterwards we will be having cake and punch in the church basement.
Reminder! There are only 3 weeks of school left! You must have all of your AR points by Friday, May 18th so that I have time to add them to your reading grade.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

4/27/12
Dear Parents,
The stage is set up! Yay! Now Tiffany is working hard to get the background set up. Metro East Lutheran is letting us borrow their coronation chairs and the Webers are letting us borrow their porch furniture. Things are looking great! There will not be any after school practice next week.
On Friday evening, the musical will start at 7 pm. Please have your child here by 6:30 pm. Friday morning, we are having a dress rehearsal at 9 am. This means that we need all costumes here on Friday morning.
Wednesday night we will have chair set up. Please plan to be there. We need a lot of hands to make it go quickly.
The Arch field trip is May 8th. I have to turn in my final adult numbers on Tuesday. If you would like to go on the field trip and have not talked to me about going yet, please do so before Tuesday or you will not be able to go to the top of the Arch. Permission forms will be coming out soon.
No memory this week because of the musical!
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

4/20/12
Dear Parents,
We sing this Sunday at the 8 am service. Please have your child in the church basement at 7:45.
Next week’s after school musical practice will be on Wednesday. Everyone in the class should be there. It will go from 3:15-4 in the gym. Also, Tiffany and I will be setting up a date to work on the stage background. If you are interested in helping please contact Tiffany Lubinski or me. Look for a note or email about a meeting date and time next week. Matt Wiggenhorn will be contacting dads to ask for help in moving the stage from CM to Zion and also to set up the stage. The date for stage set up is Friday, April 27th. Reminder, chair set up will be at 6:30 on Wednesday, May 2. We need a lot of help for that too.
Next week Thursday is class by color day. 5th grade is assigned to wear purple.
Memory next week should be said all at one time. This is the 3rd time we’ve said this verse, so it should not be too difficult.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

4/13/12
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is the PTL Auction. I hope that all of you are planning to attend. Mr. Pfeiffer, Kylie and I are offering a trip to the Zoo with a friend! J
In PE the 5th graders are doing softball. If your child would like to bring a glove to school to practice with on Mondays and Thursdays, they may. He/she does not have to bring a glove, but they can.
Sorry for cancelling last week’s musical practice at the last minute. I was thinking about practice on my way to school Thursday morning and realized we really already have the scene down. Next week we will be practicing scene 7 on Tuesday from 3-3:45. Some of the students in 5th grade have volunteered to bring in a few props. Please ask your child if he or she was one of them.
Next Sunday, April 22, 3-5th grade is singing at the 8 am service. Please put this in your calendar. It is important for each 5th grader to be there.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

3/30/12
Dear Parents,
SPRING BREAK IS HERE! YAY!
The week we get back to school, April 10th, we will be practicing scene 6 of the musical. The after school practice will be on Thursday from 3-4. Please have your lines memorized. Also, if you sing a solo, be ready to sing it without words on Tuesday, April 10th.
We are looking for parents to decorate the stage background for the musical. If you are interested in helping out please let me know. We need as much help as we can get, even if you are not very artsy.
If you would like to be a parent on our May field trip please let me know as soon as possible so I know how many Arch Tram tickets to order. You can go on the field trip and not go up in the arch if you would like as well, just let me know.
March Book It forms are due back to me no later than the Tuesday we get back, April 10th.
I have two more dates for your calendar. On April 22 we sing at the 8 am service. On May 2 we will have chair set up for the musical. We have to bring all the chairs over from the church so again, any help we can get would be much appreciated.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

3/23/12
Dear Parents,
The date for our big May field trip will be Tuesday May 8th. If you are interested in going please let me know. Each child can bring up to 1 parents/guardian if they would like. I do need to get a final count so I know how many adult Arch Tram Ride tickets to buy. Those tickets are $7/adult and $5/child.
Next week our musical practice for scene 5 will be on Tuesday and will go from 3:15-4. Again, because it is so early in the week, the students do not have to have their lines memorized for practice, but they do have to have the lines memorized by Friday when we go through the scene at school. If your son or daughter has a solo or a duet, please make sure they are looking over the words and practicing them. I would like the songs to be memorized when we come back from spring break.
Congratulations to Kathryn Butler for being the 1st place winner in our DARE Essay contest. Not only was Kathryn the first in our class, but also the first among all 5th graders in Bethalto. Avery Kaufmann was our 2nd place winner in the class. Way to go guys!
On Thursday March 29th is our 5th grade DARE Graduation! It is at 7 pm at CM high school. Please have your son or daughter there at 6:30 so we can pass out t-shirts and get lined up. The ceremony is in the gym, but the students will meet up with Mrs. Balsters and myself in the commons area.
Thursday is also student council’s wear green clothes day. So Go Green!
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

3/16/12
Dear Parents,
Mid-terms are coming home today. If I did not have a parent-teacher conference with you, please sign and return the half sheet of paper in the envelope by Wednesday.
Monday we will celebrate Josh’s birthday! Tuesday we will have an English test. Thursday we will have a math test. Friday we will have musical practice for scene 4 from 3-4 pm. They must have their lines memorized by then.
For fourth quarter the class is going to get an idea of what it will be like in junior high/middle school here at Zion. One of the differences is that in 6th-8th grade they are much stricter on late homework. If a student does not have their work turned in when the teacher asks for it, a 6th grader will get a missing assignment notice (MAN). Getting a MAN automatically takes 50% off of that homework grade. That MAN has to be signed by the student and the parent that night. Both the MAN and the completed assignment must be given to the teacher first thing in the morning. If both parts are not returned, the student is given an after school detention.
For the rest of the school year my late work policy will be as follows. All students should have their homework turned into the box on the side of the classroom by the 8 am bell. If they don’t have it turned in, for the rest of the day we will follow the current 5th grade procedure of having to stay in for recess. If a student does not have their homework turned in by 2:45 pm that day, they will get a missing assignment notice. It has to be signed and returned to me with the missing homework the next school day. If the MAN is not signed and returned to me the student will receive 50% off of that assignment. If the assignment is not signed and returned the following day, they will receive a 0%. If you have any questions just send me an email.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

3/9/12
Dear Parents,
On Sunday the 3-5 grade choir is singing at the 11 am service.
On Tuesday we have Funtastic Nutrition. We will also have musical practice from 3-4 for the people who are in scene three. Normally we would wait until Thursday or Friday, but we have conferences right after school those days. I didn’t want to do practice on Wednesday because of church that night. Because practice is so early in the week, the actors and actresses do not have to have their lines memorized until Friday. I will try to have a practice during school that day.
Thursday is the day that the class will be turning in their DARE Essay to Officer Skinner. It should be typed and follow the guidelines that Officer Skinner talked about last Monday. If your child would like to turn in their essay before Thursday, please have them give it to me and I will store them. There is also a test over the Civil War with Mrs. Huffman. Thursday after school we start conferences.
Friday morning we will have a Religion test. Friday there are more conferences. We get out of school on Friday at 11:30 for those.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

3/2/12
Dear Parents,
Next week is National Lutheran Schools Week! This school year is Zion’s 50th year, so this week will be even more special. See the school newsletter for the different dress up days. Please talk with your child about what “disco gear” looks like, as well as “80’s day.”
To get a good start on National Lutheran Schools Week, we will be singing at the 11 am service. This is a whole school event, so just have your child sit with you and when you see the other teachers coming up, your child can come up too. After singing, there will be a potluck dinner, with a celebration for our 50th school year. Following the celebration, there will be an open house at the school.
On Tuesday your 5th grade science projects are due to me. Please bring them in to the classroom in the morning. Each student will present their project to the class. Please make sure they are able to describe what they did for their project.
Wednesday the Social Studies Extra Credit is due.
Thursday is Jump Rope for Heart. In order for your son or daughter to participate in this fun activity, I have to have their permission slip Thursday morning. They do not have to do fundraising, but they do have to have the permission slip which was attached to their fundraising packet.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

2/24/12
Dear Parents,
On Monday we will celebrate Avery’s Birthday!
On Tuesday we will celebrate Matthew’s Birthday! We will also be going on a field trip to Metro East. They are hosting a new event this year called “Lutheran Schools Rally.” There will be several other Lutheran grade schools there. We will be getting ready for National Lutheran School’s week by having a cheering contest and listening to a band called “Sheltered Reality.” The permission forms are going home today. Please have those back Monday or Tuesday so that your child can go on the trip. Also, please send a sack lunch on Tuesday because we will be eating lunch early that day and will not get the option of having a hot lunch. The cost for the trip is $2.50 per student.
Wednesday Mrs. Cunningham from BJC will be back for our next lesson in “Funatastic Nutrition.”
Thursday your Book-It forms are due for the month of February.
On Friday we will have our first after school practice for the musical from 3-4. Only people who are in the Scene 1 need to come. I announced speaking parts for the musical today. Ask your son or daughter who they will be playing. We will have try outs for the singing parts on Friday during school with Mrs. Lorenz.

Dear Parents,
This Sunday, February 12th, the 3-5th grade choir will be singing at the 11 am service. Please have your child in the church basement at 10:40.
On Tuesday we will be taking Spring Pictures so dress your best! Also on Tuesday is the Valentine ’s Day party. Some kids will miss the last half of the party for band. We will make sure to hand out valentines and snack right at the beginning of the party (1:30). No one is required to bring Valentine’s Day cards. However, if your son or daughter plans on bringing Valentine’s Day cards/candy this year, please have them bring enough cards/candy for everyone in the class.
Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm is the tuition meeting.
Friday there is no school because the teachers have a conference to go to. There is also no school on Monday the 20th because of President’s Day.
The musical performed on May 4th, 2012 will be “That’s So Daniel.” We will be having tryouts during school coming up in the next couple weeks so be prepared to sing!
In Christ’s Hands,

Dear Parents,
Next week on Tuesday the boys have their last home game. We will be celebrating 8th grade night (like senior night, but for 8th graders). Feel free to join for a fun game against Holy Cross.
Wednesday is our 5th grade chapel! It starts at 8:15 so feel free to come and worship with us. Wednesday we will also be celebrating Sidney’s ½ birthday!
Thursday is Beach and Sunglasses Day! Remember, you must still follow dress code, and you should still dress warm since it will probably be cold.
On Friday the book orders are due. Please remember you can order on-line. If you would like to give the order to me, that will work too, but please write a check because Scholastic will not take cash.
The Young Authors Stories are due to me no later than January 31st. If your son or daughter would like to turn it in before that, they are welcome to.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

1/13/12
Dear Parents,
There is no school on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. day.
There are no big tests next week.
Reminder, please be working on your young authors story. Those are due to me by January 31st. Everyone is required to write one. Each story should have a title page and illustrations. The story should be new and creative. It should be typed. Your pictures can either be pasted in or can be drawn in. It is up to you how long you want to make your story, but please make sure that it has a strong beginning, middle, and end.
Each 5th grader is also required to do a science project for me. You do not have to put it in the school science fair, but you can if you would like to. Please follow the guidelines that are set out for you in the paper that is coming out today about it. If you would like to put your project into the school fair, the blue form needs to be turned in. The science projects are due to me on Tuesday, March 6th. This is after they are due for the school so that you can use the same project in both the school competition and the 5th grade assignment.
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

1/6/11
Dear Parents,
HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY EPIPHANY!
Today we got to celebrate Amber’s 11th birthday! Also, coming home today is your son or daughter’s report card for 2nd quarter. Please look at it and return the “I have seen” from by Wednesday, January 11th. Normally we would also be sending home the achievement test scores with this report card. Unfortunately, the testing company has not given us all of the papers yet. I will send them home as soon as I get them.
The 5th grade class has finished their puzzle and has earned a party! We will be celebrating on Thursday by watching Cars 2, eating Domino’s pizza, and drinking soda. Please find the order form for pizza, also in the communicator. I will provide soda. Several students have volunteered to bring in the DVD.
We will be starting DARE on Thursday as well! It will be from 10-11 am every Thursday for the next 10 weeks. We are all excited!

Dear Parents,
It’s Christmas Break! And that means we’re already ½ way through the school year. Enjoy your time off!
One thing your child can be working on over Christmas break is his or her young author’s story. Everyone in 5th grade is required to write one. Each story should have a title page and illustrations. The story should be new and creative. It should be typed. Your pictures can either be pasted in or can be drawn in. It is up to you how long you want to make your story, but please make sure that it has a strong beginning, middle, and end. These stories are due to me no later than January 31st.
The Book-It charts for December are due to me on January 3rd, the day we get back.
Something for your child to look forward to, we will be starting DARE on January 12th. The 6th graders will be joining us this year because they did not get to participate in DARE last year. It will be a full class, but fun I’m sure!
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

Thursday is picture day! So dress your best!
Friday is mid-term for 1st quarter. You will receive mid-term report cards on the 23rd of September.
Have a great weekend!

Dear Parents,
Coming home today are three Scholastic Book Orders. If you or your child find a book you would like to order there are two ways you can do so. The first one is to fill out the order form on the back of the book order and return it to me with a check made out to “Scholastic.” The second way for you to order is for you to go to the Scholastic web site and order yourself. Please see the separate sheet of paper labeled "Get your hands on a good book" for more specific directions about how to do that.
We will have our Unit 1 Religion Test on Friday. We will be filling out our Religion review sheet together on Thursday morning. If you would like to start reviewing before Thursday you can look through the lessons in the Religion book and discuss some of the questions.
There is no school on Monday! Enjoy your three day weekend and have a fantastic Labor Day!
In Christ’s Hands,
Mrs. Pfeiffer

Monday’s D-team volleyball game is cancelled.

I know I forgot to tell some of you what my memory procedures are this year. You will be given a memory verse each Friday. You may say the verse any day of the following week, as long as you say it by Friday. You can say your memory to me during DEAR or Journal each morning.
Next week, each class will be taking the AIMS Web tests again to see how our students are doing in reading fluency. These tests will be given Tuesday. I will also be giving the students a reading comprehension test on Tuesday
